Malas are a string of 108 beads traditionally used in Eastern cultures as a tool for meditation and prayer.
The number 108 is seen as a spiritually powerful number in bindu and Buddhist traditions, and it is found in sacred geometrical formulas both in the natural world and the mystical. Their use as a part of Mantra meditation, where each bead is chanted upon, is well known in traditional cultures worldwide.
The 109th bead, called the Hindu, represents the Guru or teacher and it gives us an opportunity to meditate on the gratitude we feel towards our teachers for guiding us along our Soul journey.
Our Malas, whether used to meditate, or worn around the neck, serve to remind us of the spiritual focus in our lives and encourage us in our personal practice.
